Oil painting, print or textured reproduction?
Ask exactly how the image was made and what it is painted or printed on. Canvas, board and paper require different descriptions. Surface texture in a photograph is not enough to establish an original oil painting; reproductions can also have a textured finish.
Request an overall image, details in even light and a photograph of the reverse where safely accessible. Record the image dimensions and the outside frame dimensions separately. A dealer should distinguish what has been examined from what is merely assumed.
Floral paintings: composition and color in the room
Choose the scale before matching every color. A single bouquet in a small frame may suit a narrow wall, while a larger still life needs enough surrounding space to remain legible. Make a paper template and view it from the places where you usually sit or enter.
Repeat one color from the painting in a textile or piece of pottery rather than reproducing the whole palette. A quiet wall can accommodate flowers painted with strong contrast; a busy wall may make a delicate arrangement difficult to appreciate.
Signatures, attribution and vintage French art
Photograph the complete signature and any labels or inscriptions. A signature can guide research but cannot establish authenticity by itself. Ask whether the artist’s name is documented, attributed or simply suggested by resemblance.
French subject matter and purchase in France do not prove French manufacture. Retain invoices, catalogue references and prior condition reports when they exist. Avoid inventing a biography around an indistinct name or dating a painting solely by its frame.
Condition and framing: examine them separately
Ask about lifting paint, tears, staining, deformation and previous restoration. A dark varnish or an attractive old frame can obscure the surface; photographs may not reveal the full condition. Do not attempt cleaning with household products or remove a fragile work from its frame without appropriate help.

No. Subject, country of manufacture and artist attribution are separate questions.
Can I date a painting from its frame?
Not reliably. Frames can be replaced or reused, so the work needs its own assessment.
