What is a vintage glass flower frog?
A flower frog is an arrangement tool rather than a vase. Holes support individual stems while the surrounding container holds the water. Glass examples can be domed or relatively flat, and their practical value depends on how well they fit the bowl you want to use.
The Smithsonian Gardens collection documents an early twentieth-century glass example and explains its role in flower arranging. That example is a useful reference for the object type; it does not establish the age or origin of a similar-looking piece.
Clear or green glass flower frog: what should you compare?
Measure the widest part of the base and the internal width of your container. Compare the size and spacing of the holes with the stems you intend to arrange. Ask for a side view so you can judge whether the frog will sit below the rim or remain visible.
A green glass flower frog can add color to a clear bowl; a colorless example offers a quieter effect. Color alone is not evidence of age. Request photographs in daylight and ask whether the glass has any persistent clouding.
Check the holes, base and edges before buying
Inspect the rim of every hole, the underside and any raised edges. Small chips can be difficult to see against a patterned background. Ask for close-ups against a plain surface, including any damage the seller has recorded.
Check that the piece sits securely without rocking in its intended container. A repaired or damaged example may be better kept for display. An attractive shape should not replace a clear condition report.
Build a simple vintage flower arrangement
Start with a bowl and frog that fit comfortably together. Choose a small number of stems so the shape of the container remains visible, and keep the arrangement low enough for conversation at a table.
Pair clear glass with faience or opaline nearby, leaving space between the objects. Keep any claims about French manufacture separate from the styling: an arrangement can have a French country feel without every component being French.
