French provincial style versus documented antiques
Curved legs, shaped aprons and carved decoration can appear in old furniture and later reproductions. A style name describes an appearance; a period attribution needs supporting evidence. Ask the seller to distinguish what is documented from what is an informed opinion.
Request photographs of the back, underside, joints and interior as well as the front. Look for a coherent account of construction and alterations. No single feature, including a screw, joint or patch of wear, should carry the whole attribution.
Antique French furniture: compare condition
Separate surface wear from structural faults. A scratched top may suit your room; a loose joint, split support or poorly attached cornice can affect use and transport. Ask which repairs are old, which are recent and whether the piece has been assessed for stability.
Inspect drawers and doors in the open position. A replacement shelf or repaired foot need not rule out a purchase, but it should be described clearly. Include finishing, repairs and any specialist handling in the total budget rather than comparing asking prices alone.
French country furniture: choose by proportion
Measure the usable room, not only the wall. For a table, account for chairs and movement around them. For a cabinet, check door swing, internal depth and the height of the storage you actually need. An imposing piece in a showroom can dominate a smaller room.

Transporting a cabinet or armoire
Confirm the overall dimensions and whether any parts detach safely. Map the route through doorways, stairs and turns, including the destination room. Ask who dismantles and reassembles the piece, and whether those services are included in the written delivery quote.
