Ottoman or coffee table: decide by daily use
If you mainly want a place to rest your feet or occasional extra seating, an upholstered piece may suit the room. If you regularly write, eat or use a laptop there, a firm table surface can be more practical. Check that any proposed seat is designed to support a seated person.
Consider who uses the room, whether pets share the sofa and how often drinks will be placed nearby. A tray offers a firmer surface but does not turn every soft cushion into a stable table. Test the arrangement rather than relying on a styled photograph.
Choose height and size beside the sofa
Measure the seat height and the space between the sofa and the furniture opposite. Mark the proposed footprint on the floor and walk through the room. Leave enough space for doors, drawers and comfortable movement; an oversized ottoman can interrupt the route even when it fits visually.
Compare a rectangular, square or round shape with your seating arrangement. Record the usable top area after allowing for a tray. Think about where books, remote controls and a cup will go when the ottoman is also being used as a footrest.
Vintage upholstery and condition checks
Inspect the frame, feet, joints, fabric and underside. Ask about repairs, reupholstery and what is known about the filling. Old upholstery may conceal construction or wear that is not visible from above, so request a condition account rather than judging by the fabric alone.
For reupholstery, obtain a separate estimate before buying. Discuss the intended use and any applicable requirements with the upholsterer. Fabric selection should reflect cleaning needs and wear, not just a color scheme. A removable tray also needs a suitable resting place when not in use.
Style an ottoman in a French country room
Link the upholstery to an existing textile and let another element provide contrast: a wooden side table, a mirror or a small group of pottery. A simple tray with room around it often works better than a dense display that must be removed whenever someone sits down.
