Does a ladder-back design prove French origin?
No. Ladder-back chairs appear in different traditions. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, for example, catalogues a ladder-back chair as possibly British. A familiar silhouette should start an investigation rather than settle an attribution.
Ask for photographs of the back, underside and joints. Record the number and shape of rails, leg profile, material description and any labels or documented history. A regional name should be supported by more than a woven seat or worn finish.
Rush, cane, wood or replacement upholstery?
Describe the seat independently of the frame. A replacement seat can keep an older chair useful, but its material and condition should be clear. Look at the underside as well as the visible surface, particularly where weaving or upholstery meets the rails.
Ask about sagging, broken strands, loose edges and previous repairs. Do not assume a seat will support regular dining use because it appears intact in a photograph. If renewal is needed, obtain an estimate before comparing the chair with a ready-to-use example.
Check the joints before judging the patina

For a decorative pair, matching silhouettes may matter most. For daily dining, consistent comfort and sound structure take priority. Include seating repairs and transport in the comparison, and ask how the chair backs and legs will be protected in transit.
